AEU is the program administrator for a group self-insurance mutual fund based in Bermuda (see alma.bm), which is authorized to provide USL&H by the U.S. Department of Labor.  The mutual can provide employers’ liability protection (including Incidental Maritime Employers Liability) and is also authorized to provide Defense Base Act, Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act, and Nonappropriated Fund Instrumentalities Act coverage.

In addition, AEU has binding authority with The Hartford and PMA to provide a companion State Act workers’ compensation program.

AEU has deep roots within the maritime industry, and these roots have yielded invaluable knowledge and experience.  We understand this business inside and out, and we put this understanding to work in everything we do.

AEU has established strong relationships with brokers who service maritime companies including stevedores and other marine cargo handlers, marine terminal operators, ship builders, ship repairers, steamship agents, marine contractors and other waterfront businesses.

AEU's expertise in underwriting, loss control, and claims has produced the ALMA System.  This combination of best in the industry services produces improved experience for members, resulting in fewer losses, lower claims costs and thereby enables members to reach their optimized target premium rate. This has been repeatedly demonstrated and documented.

AEU’s marine insurance background, strong customer service and established relationships with retail brokers strategically position AEU to continue to expand its position as the market of choice for waterfront businesses.
